Your Guide to Korcula
Korcula has bucketloads of the rarest Croatian commodity. Sand. The Lumbarda Peninsula is trimmed by beach, trees and dive-right-in-seas. Sandy strips like Pavja Luka are solely accessible by RIB or hiking trail. All too public? Try Proizd, a lonely islet off Korčula’s northwest coastline. It’s a geological wonder of white stone beaches and Thai-style bays.
Marco Polo would still recognise his birthplace in Korcula Town. Like a mini-Dubrovnik, the walled city drips like a teardrop in the Adriatic blue. Venetians came for the timber. For 400 years they exported wooden boats back to Venice, while importing a fixation with food. The island is hooked on Žrnovski makaruni, a seafood pasta, and Korčulanska pašticada, an unctuous gnocchi. Your chef can source sea bass, oysters and olive oil locally, then recreate Korcula in seven star style.
The Ancient Greeks called Korcula ‘Korkyra Melaina’ - the Black Corfu. They searched the island’s dense interior for pošip, an only-found-here grape that makes the world’s most complex white wine. Hiking trails follow ancient history through vineyards and forest. The most telegenic trailhead is Rasohatica, a succession of boat-only bays. The only shadows here are those cast on the seabed by visiting yachts.
