Welcome to the white island
Brač is the white island. Coves and quays are cast from white sand and white stone. (The latter was used to build Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the White House in Washington, DC.) Charter a yacht here to see them all. Brač reaches its sun-bleached zenith at Zlatni Rat. It’s the beach that crowned a thousand Croatia tourism posters. Imagine a pure white peninsula, like a sandy toe testing the temperature of the Adriatic Sea. Which in summer maxes out at 27°C (80°F).

Your Guide to Brač
Brac offers far more than beaches - although there is 175km of coastline to choose from. Since the Bronze Age, hiking trails have connected rock-carved monasteries - like the Blaca Hermitage - with Instagram peaks - like 788m-high Vidova Gora. Daredevils can paraglide back down to the exclusive harbour of Bol. It sure beats travelling by SUV.
Brač was built on three products: wine, fish and olive oil. Waterside wineries like Stina let guests sip, saunter and shop for bottles of Plavac Mali and Tribidrag: ancient varieties which grandfathered the Zinfandel grape. The chic ports of Bol and Supetar are seafood central. Find crni rizot, a black risotto laced in squid ink, and buzara, a giant cookout tray brimming with shrimps, clams and parsley. Inland bikers and hikers will find 300-year-old olive groves. The olive oil industry dates from Venetian rule, when harming a tree was punished by law.
As the Dalmatia Coast’s largest island, Brac has always been about the sea. Calm bays and stiff breezes make it the windsurf capital of Croatia. A 20-minute cruise from Bol, dive sites like Golubinja Spilja and abound with cuttlefish and conger eels, while Babice Stine features the underwater ruins of a Roman villa with a mosaic floor. Motor on towards Hvar and Vis. Here swordfish and giant tuna patrol depths of over 100m.
