Cayo Largo

Cayo Largo

Avast ye! This Cuban island is a former pirate hideout. And what bounty: miles of near-pink sand, immaculate coral reefs, bales of sea turtles – (almost) all to yourself.

Cuba’s Castaway Island

Just 40nm south of Cuba and sporting 25km of beautiful, pink-rose-coloured sands, Cayo Largo is cut from the cloth of the Gods. Once a hideaway for pirates and ne'er-do-wells, it's bottlenose dolphins that stalk the waters these days, alongside stunning sea turtles. It's also home to the Caribbean's most unspoiled reefs, but you'll need a special sort of yacht charter to reach them. And a captain who knows exactly where to moor.

Reasons to Visit Cayo Largo

Nature You Won’t See Elsewhere

This immaculate apparition, east of Isla de la Juventud, is completely out of the way. The second biggest cay on the Canarreos Archipelago – it measures a mere 25km by 3km – but it has natural beauty in spades. The west is all about sand, sun and sea toys, with Playas Sirena and Paraiso the pick of the pura vida. Need more reasons to charter a Cayo Largo yacht? Here are three.

Playa Sirena

There isn't a better stretch of sand in all of Cuba. Not one. No wonder Castro gave it the thumbs up. Like a true beach buccaneer, position offshore and stake your claim to this stunning, centrefold of a beach. White, pillow-soft sand. Nonchalantly leaning palms. Water pure enough to anoint saints. It's ideal for playing too, so grab your kayak. Or snorkel. Or a second glass of champagne.

Reef Diving

If you're only going to do one thing at Cayo Largo, make it a dive. From colourful coral reefs to shipwrecks, walls and intriguing grottos, this place has it all. Get your Y.CO crew to weigh anchor near the barrier reef – about a mile offshore – for the best chance to dance with parrotfish, snapper, surgeonfish, turtles, tarpon and rays. You won’t find clearer waters anywhere. Sublime doesn't quite cut it.

Playa Paraíso

This heavenly curl of demerara sand and turquoise water on the southwest coast is the place to moor your Y.CO yacht charter for fun with the toys. Windsurfing, kayaking, and jet-skiing. The odd catamaran makes its way around to this side of the island, too. Otherwise, it's pretty slow paced. Think beachside cocktails. Snorkelling through shallow waters. Who are we kidding? It's also the best place to do nothing at all.
