Bohemian Rhapsody
Formentera is Ibiza’s starry-eyed little sister. A hippy-chic island where Pink Floyd wrote songs on a wild beach, while Bob Dylan lived in a lighthouse. Transport dates from 1973. 12,000 islanders navigate paradise on 50cc scooters. Visitors are encouraged to use 32 ‘Green Routes’ by two wheels or two feet. These trails reach snorkel spots and vineyards via fig forests and flamingo lagoons. Formentera is the Balearics as they used to be.

Your Guide to Formentera
Paradise isn’t perfect. Sailors complain of sunburn, sandy bikinis and hair knotted into saline curls. Formentera wakes up to the songs of rock thrush and Sardinian warbler. At the same hour, Ibiza is still spinning house music in the club.
Head to Playa de Migjorn, a 5km ribbon of sand without a single hotel or Playa de Levante, a wild beach where you can windsurf to an empty spot. Or Playa de Ses Illetes, a sun-kissed sandbar that forms an icing sugar trail halfway to Ibiza. Hard to say adios? Play the same tune again tomorrow.
Spend an afternoon in a chiringuito beach bar like Juan y Andrea. This humble shack has barely updated its menu in 35 years. Expect salt-baked bream, shrimp paella and watermelon salad. Plus tempranillo red wines fired by Formentera’s 8,500 annual sunshine hours. A cerulean sea tempts just 25m away. Yet it requires such effort to disembark your hammock, you may consider saving a swim for another day.
