1,000m-high cliffs protect the greatest natural harbour in Europe and the City of Kotor within. Little wonder the scene has barely changed in 500 years, making it one of four UNESCO-protected musts. The mountainous backdrop gave the nation its name. The Venetians allowed the ‘montenegro’, or black mountains, to protect the coast, while they fortified the shoreline with castles, lighthouses and city walls. All of which exist today.

In Montenegro the 20th century was a double-edged sword. Sea battles and socialist struggles left shipwrecks and a shoreline that was strictly off-limits. All that changed in 2006. After independence the country’s naval base became Porto Montenegro, the hippest marina this side of Monaco. Submarine tunnels became kayak spots. Montenegro remains a kaleidoscope of contrasts.
